China Netcom to Adopt Homegrown Digital A/V Codec in IPTV Network
April 04, 2007
China Netcom has decided to implement China's homegrown digital A/V codec AVS (Audio Video Coding Standard) in its IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) network in 2007, following favorable results from tests conducted in Dalian starting in December 2006. In addition to implementing AVS in 20 cities, China Netcom plans to switch from H.264 to AVS in four cities currently undergoing IPTV trials. China Netcom expects to increase the number of AVS-based IPTV users to two million in two years and six million in five to seven years. Plans to test the AVS technology on a 3G TD-SCDMA network have been proposed as well, without any details or timetable announced, however.
